Something’s changing.

The question I keep asking,
And maybe you do too, is this:

Are we still living in the same republic?
Or is this just the sound of another pendulum swinging?

A Republic, If You Can Keep It

Franklin warned us with those words at the dawn of this thing called America.
And here we are, two and a half centuries later, testing whether we still can.

It’s tempting to write off the chaos around us as political whiplash.
One party in. One party out.
Blue versus red.
The usual.

But something feels different now. Doesn’t it?

We’re not just disagreeing on taxes or policy.
We’re disagreeing on truth itself.
On elections. On justice. On who the "real" Americans are.
We’re no longer debating within the same house.
We’re breaking the beams of the house itself.

Is It All Just Noise?

Some days, I want to believe that.
That we’re just caught in another cycle of partisan noise,
amped up by talking heads and algorithmic rage.
That we’ll settle down after the next election,
and get back to disagreeing with dignity.

And maybe part of that’s true.
We’ve survived worse:

• A civil war that split us by blood

• Watergate’s erosion of presidential trust

• The Red Scare, with neighbors turning on each other

• 9/11, which rewired our sense of safety

• A financial collapse that nearly took us all down with it

• The long tail of slavery and Jim Crow, and the backlash to civil rights

• The war on drugs and the carceral state it built

• The Patriot Act and the surveillance state

• The Iraq War, WMD lies, and disillusionment with U.S. foreign policy

• The rise of mass shootings and the normalization of domestic terror

• January 6th and the mainstreaming of political violence

• Climate inaction despite the undeniable evidence

• A pandemic that politicized life and death itself

• And so on, and so on

But through it all, there was at least the sense that the system, imperfect as it was, held.

Now?
Even that feels up for grabs.

The Real Battle Isn’t Left vs. Right

It’s something deeper:

• Pluralism vs. Purity

• Rule of law vs. Rule by force

• Shared truth vs. Fragmented realities

What worries me most isn’t who wins the next election.
It’s what happens if nobody believes the result.
If courts become battlegrounds for vengeance
instead of arenas for justice.
If political violence becomes “justified” depending on who swings the bat.

That’s not democracy recalibrating.
That’s democracy decaying.

So What Now?

Look, this isn't a eulogy.
I'm not writing from a bunker.
But I am writing from a place of deep watchfulness.

Because I believe the republic isn’t automatic.
It runs on participation. On principle.
On people who give a damn, especially when the system seems broken.

And if you’re reading this,
I know you're one of them.

We may not be able to stop the cracks alone,
but we can lean into the beams.
We can remind people that civic faith is not naïve;
It’s courageous.

Final Thought:

I don't know if the foundation will hold.
But I do know this:

A republic isn't something you inherit.
It's something you renew in practice, and often, in pain.

And maybe, just maybe,
we’re living through a reckoning that will give birth to a better version.
One less naïve.
More inclusive.
And still, stubbornly, free.

I started a gratitude journal years ago. Some weeks and months and years I’m really consistent, others not so much. Over the years, this has become more of a journal of everything. The snapshots of my emotions on different dates capture memories that I know one day I will forget. Some of it is really repetitive (should gratitude always be new?) and boring to read, but other times, when I go back and explore the journal, I get returned to where my head was at during that time. I remember what was going on around me. These are some of the snapshots I’ve found lately.

The Quiet Miracles

Some days I still forget to notice.
Other days, it hits me all at once, just how lucky I am to be here.
Sober. Trusted. Loved.

This piece is about those days. The small ones. The sacred ones.
The quiet miracles.

The coffee wasn’t anything special.
But it was hot, and she made it for me.
And when I said thank you, she smiled like it didn’t cost her anything.
That’s the kind of miracle I’m learning to notice.

My daughter laughed at some dumb meme,
the kind that loops the sound over and over until it becomes holy nonsense.
I used to ignore that kind of noise.
Now I feel my eyes sting from the way joy echoes in her throat.

We made the bed together.
No big deal.
But for a long time, we were either too tired, too angry, or too far apart.
Now it’s a morning ritual.
The creases in the sheet are smoother than the lines we used to draw between us.

I heard the rain and didn’t brace myself.
Didn’t flinch or curse it or call it a mood.
I just stood there, window open,
letting it fall like grace I didn’t earn but get to keep anyway.

My son handed me a homework sheet.
“Can you help?”
Two words that didn’t used to belong to me.
They do now.

Sometimes I wake up before the alarm.
No sweat. No panic.
Just breath in my chest and quiet in the house.
I lie there and listen to nothing.
It used to be unbearable.
Now it’s a hymn.

Stephanie didn’t raise her voice.
Not once today.
And neither did I.
We just lived the day like it wasn’t fragile.
Like we trust it’ll still be there tomorrow.

I’m still chasing meaning and purpose like buried treasure.
But these days, I find it in smaller places.

In the sound of the dishwasher late at night.
In a sock folded right.
In a second cup of coffee,
just because she thought I’d want one.

That’s the miracle:
I get to love them
without wondering if I deserve to.

Walking today, the sun felt warm. The humidity is high, but after forty years, I'm used to it. Walking today is what I do every day, a silent attempt at escape.

I stared off at a tree, the clouds slowly drifting between my squinting eyes. My dark, caterpillar-like eyebrows offered almost enough shade, kind of like when you're driving and pull the visor down but still can't quite block the blinding sunlight.

Walking today, I lost myself and glimpsed freedom. It was almost invisible, like a sudden awareness of gratitude that whispered I could walk away right now, go anywhere I wanted. For just a breath, that thought comforted me, and I thought I’d unlocked something profound.

But the moment passed quickly, leaving only the dissipating haze of a memory. A memory of a faded feeling, the emotion lost in the familiar wake of responsibility, and one day at a time.

Then, as quickly as it came, it left.

Political podcasts playing piously in my ears consumed my attention.

Even on my walks, I can't escape.

As told by the wedding ring.

The cold was sharp that morning. He yanked off his glove to light a cigarette, and they both stood there laughing together. They were young, too young, pretending they weren’t terrified. She held his hand and whispered, “Let’s do this anyway.” They stood in a small garden, just outside the city, surrounded by frost-bitten shrubs and one blooming hellebore: a flower known to rise and bloom through snow, even in the dead of winter.

That was when he gave me to her.
Not with a speech. Not with certainty.
But with trembling hands and a pounding heart.
She said yes, even though they both knew they weren’t ready.

It was late December, one of those hushed holiday mornings when even the broken things in a relationship feel temporarily redeemed. Pine needles, coffee steam, and the kind of grace that only shows up in the cold.

I slipped off her finger, tossed loose from her glove like a sigh she didn’t mean to let out. She hadn’t noticed right away. The toddlers needed breakfast. The baby had a fever. He, her husband, was somewhere in the garage, hungover and trying to convince himself he hadn’t ruined the night before.

I landed in snow, barely a whisper.

Then the mower got me in spring and launched me across the yard like a secret nobody wanted to claim. I hit the concrete path hard. He came stumbling home late that night, the reek of whiskey, blood on his knuckles, muttering some half-truth to the wind. He actually kicked me, right there in the dark. Didn’t feel a thing.

That’s how I went under.
The dirt took me.

Spring, Year One

That first night, he’d muttered something about retracing steps, but in the months that passed, the grass grew over the path. The man had started digging out beds behind the garage, bare-handed. Like many projects, it was left half done, a product of too much ambition and vision, and not enough action.

His mother and the three boys had finished the garden and surprised him with it for Father’s Day, adorned with a painted sign that said "Dad’s Garden" in crooked blue letters.
He cried, blamed the onions, and then cracked a beer and wandered back inside.

They planted tomatoes that year.
And forgiveness.
One took- the other didn’t.

Summer, Year Four

He wasn’t faithful. I felt the tension in the soil, the way she watered in silence, like it was her only place to feel anything. The kids played nearby. He was gone more often-“working,” or “networking.” Always some excuse. He came home some nights with guilt in his pockets and bravado in his voice, but she never said a word.

She didn’t have to. I already knew.

Winter, Year Seven

The yelling was louder than the leaves.

He’d gotten arrested again. Something stupid. Something dangerous. He was spiraling again, but this time it seemed different, and it was. She’d packed one big bag and three little bags and put them in the car, struggling to lift them over her pregnant belly. The boys watched cartoons too loudly to drown out what they both knew was coming, but then loaded up in the car reluctantly without their father.

He didn’t drink that night.
Didn’t drink the next night either.
He asked for help. He ate humility and forced himself to look in the mirror. No more lost ambition this time. He was finally ready to give up so he could truly begin.

And then she came back.
I still don’t know why she came back.

Fall, Year Eight

He gave her a new ring. Not to replace me- just something to honor who she was for him through all of it. Small diamond. Simple band. He called it a “commitment to the commitment.”

Earlier in the spring that year, they had Charlie. A girl. The daughter he never admitted he prayed for. Not because he didn’t love his sons, but because he hoped, foolishly, maybe, that a girl might see only the best in him. That she might grow up never knowing the version of her father that was broken. Charlie became his quiet redemption.

The man and the woman became closer, and something shifted unsaid. They got married finally. The baby slept, and the boys wore tiny suits. They beamed and talked about how the boys had giggled when the officiant called them “husband and wife.” The woman looked radiant. He looked terrified and ready.

And for once, present.

Spring, Year Twelve

The soil changed. Not just from compost, but from peace. The garden grew better, and the fights got quieter and less frequent. The boys were older now. They noticed everything, especially the way their parents no longer screamed to solve things.

He still planted tomatoes. This year, he built her a raised bed trug for her birthday. He kissed her forehead and said, “I hope I get to grow old with you here.”

She smiled, but her eyes were tired.

Seasons Passed

I had long stopped hoping to be found. Through spring rains and autumn rot, under tomato vines and bean stalks, I listened. The garden grew above me, chaotic, wild, full of life. The boys got older. The house settled into its aging bones, and I remained hidden. Patient.

Buried in silence beneath the frost line, I'd felt seasons pass like breaths, roots tangling around me, the soil shifting, growing, and remembering. I had once rested on a warm finger, kissed by vows spoken too young and too unsure, but real nonetheless. I’d witnessed joy, betrayal, forgiveness, and everything love becomes after the music stops.

Until the day she pulled me up with a carrot.

A knotted root had grown clean through me, threaded like a needle through time.
I’d once been proof of a promise, and now, I was the secret artifact of it.

The girl holding me gasped, wide-eyed.

“Mama?”

Her voice cracked the air like thunder over still water.
Footsteps. Breath.
A woman dropped to her knees.

It was her.
The one who had worn me. The one who had waited; the one who had come back.

Then he stepped outside, and his face drained as he saw what she was holding.

Winter, Years Later

The house had changed hands. The garden, too, but one drawer still stuck halfway open, and that’s where she kept me now in velvet, like a secret.

Snow tapped at the windows as she opened the box and lifted me again. She was older. Wiser. Still graceful. Her eyes looked out the window with a kind of peace I’d never seen before.

Aiden had come to talk. Charlie’s longtime love, quiet and steady, was still too broke to afford a ring, but desperate to propose. He thought he had nothing to offer but his heart.

She called her husband into the room and handed him the box.
They shared a look. It was a look that was a whole lifetime all at once.

“This isn’t new,” she said, placing me in Aiden’s hand.
“But it’s earned.”

Spring, Present Day

Charlie walked among the flowers with Aiden, unaware of the generations folded into the soil beneath their feet. The garden had changed, but not completely.
The hellebore still bloomed.

He knelt, nervous.
Not shaking like her father had, but glowing with a steady light.

She laughed and cried at the same time, and when he opened the box, I caught the flicker in her eyes.

Recognition.

Not just of me, but of everything I had survived on their behalf.

She slid me on her finger.

I had been lost in their hardest years, buried through their rebuild, and found in their harvest. And for a moment, resting in the girl’s hand, I realized I had not been lost. I had been growing.

I wasn’t ready to be a dad.
Not when Camden was born. Not when Cooper followed, 360 days later. I was still a kid myself. Willingly reckless, selfish, full of an anger I didn’t know how to name. Stephanie couldn’t even legally drink when we had our first son. And I was neck-deep in addiction and alcoholism, convinced I could hustle my way into being a “good enough” father just by showing up.

I even told myself I was ahead of the game because I was around. I’d taken Calogero’s line from A Bronx Tale, “The working man is a sucker”, and made it my twisted mantra. I believed I could be loud, wild, self-made, and still somehow be a good dad. After all, I was there.

But I wasn’t present.

Stephanie was the one doing the real work- holding everything together with nothing but willpower, instinct, and love. She carried the emotional weight. She was the consistent one, the stable one, the one who fed, nurtured, taught, and protected. She still says she was a single parent back then, even though I was around. And she’s not wrong.

I thought showing up physically counted for something. But deep down, I knew it wasn’t enough.

At the time, I was carrying a chip the size of my father. I met him when I was about ten. A few years later, I got the phone call. He was starting a new family. A new son, a new wife, the whole setup that I never got. He expected me to be happy for him. To this day, I’ve struggled with that moment, and that lingering resentment justified a lot of the selfishness I clung to. I ran my mouth. Got into fights. Lived loud and loose like I had something to prove and nothing to lose.

That version of me, what Stephanie calls “Rufus at full volume”, died on December 22, 2012.

That’s the day I got arrested and nearly faced a decade in prison. It’s also the day I got sober. I haven’t had a drink since.

But sobriety isn’t a finish line, though. It’s a beginning. Staying sober is different than relearning how to live sober.

My therapist used to tell me at that time that I had marketable traits. That I could use my entrepreneurial spirit and green thumb for good. So I worked in a greenhouse. I learned to landscape. Got humbled. Took a $8/hour job from a woman I met in AA who saw more potential in me than I saw in myself. Eventually, another AA connection got me in with a landscaping company. I started building things. Systems. Trust. A team. Myself.

My goal was simple: to become the kind of man my kids could be proud of.

But I didn’t do that alone.

Stephanie didn’t just endure those hard years. She walked through them with me. She believed in me before I believed in myself. She’s been patient when I didn’t deserve it. Graceful when I was all rough edges. Fierce when our family needed defending. Through everything- my lowest lows and my shaky rise- she has been my rock.

And we’re still figuring it out.
Now we’ve got two younger ones, Jaxson and Mackenzie. They’ve never seen me drunk. Never seen the police tear open their Christmas gifts during a search like their brothers did. But they’ve still seen me lose my temper. Still seen me go from zero to sixty over something small.

I’m not perfect. I absolutely still mess up. But I apologize, now, and I mean it. Stephanie and I both do. We talk about it. We model making amends not just with words, but with behavior. That’s the kind of legacy we’re trying to leave.

We’re different parents now. Less rigid. Less reactive.
Our older boys love to remind us:

“We never got to get away with that.”

And they’re not wrong either.

It’s strange being parents twice. First as kids ourselves, wild and wounded. Now, as adults, more seasoned, more tired, more aware of how quickly it all goes. And now we’re getting ready to be parents to adults. That part? It still feels wild.

We’re tired. We’re still learning. We’re still growing.

But one thing I know now that I didn’t know then:
It’s not about being perfect.
It’s about being present.
And staying. Together.

There’s a moment you don’t talk about much.
Not the failure. Not the comeback.
The part in between when you’re not falling, but you’re not flying either. Just stuck. Quietly.

That’s where I am.

I’m 40 now. Not old. Not young. But definitely aware that I’m not promised another 40. And if I’m honest, the second half of my life deserves something braver than what I’ve been settling for.

I feel it in my work, where the impact doesn’t go deep enough. Where the program I run doesn’t reach far enough. Where I know I’m capable of more, but also boxed in by things like policy, politics, and the hushed reality that I’m a felon. The opportunities that exist feel like rare air. I’m lucky to have what I do, and I know it, but it’s not it. Not all the way.

I’ve been told I’m a leader, and I believe that. I’ve survived, rebuilt, created, and lifted others. But now I’m asking: what would it look like to lead in a way that actually feels like freedom?

And then there’s the spiritual side of this.
Raised Catholic, I once believed in confession as a clean slate. Until I saw the rot underneath the robes.
I looked for more authenticity in the evangelical world and found politics dressed as faith.

So now I’m wandering again. But not lost.

I’m drawn to older paths. Earthy ones. Rooted in blood memory. In ritual. In reverence. Pagan, maybe. Ancestral. Something that connects me not to perfection, but to the cycles of becoming. My people, my ancestors, they knew something I forgot.

Maybe what I’m in right now isn’t a crisis. Maybe it’s a rite. A holy discomfort.
Not knowing what’s next isn’t failure. It’s a threshold.
Maybe this stuckness isn’t a sign I’m broken. Maybe it’s sacred.

I don’t have a plan, but I do have a promise to myself:
No more playing small. No more bending to systems that ask me to shrink or lie. No more mistaking survival for purpose.

Whatever comes next in my career, faith, my life, I want it to be real.
Rooted. Bigger than platitudes. Braver than performance.

I owe myself that much.
